Sitting around a bonfire brings back a flood of memories of my days in summer camp. I especially love KUMZITZIM on KAYITZ BAKIBBUTZ in Shluchot— the savoring of the Israeli version of s’mores, singing songs while some-one strums a guitar; sharing stories, playing games, all at the foothill of the majestic Gilboa mountains. The greatest feeling comes from being with friends old and new.
Lag B’Omer represents a break in the period of mourning of the occurrence of the plague that killed so many of Rabbi Akiva’s students. Today as we enjoy a respite here in Israel from the Covid-19 plague, the upcoming Lag Ba’ Omer holiday is especially significant. We can look into the fire, wish refuah shleima to those who are still sick and Hakarat Hatov to the scientists who brought us the vaccine, and to the medical professionals who have helped us throughout this year. This Lag BaOmer as you gaze into the fire you can think about all your great memories of camp, and more importantly how you will make new memories in summer 2021. You can sign up for camp on our web site at www.kayitz.com
